Welcome to the African global adventure!
If you are looking for a holistic approach to geography that explores the world through the lens of science, compassion, and wonder—this is the curriculum for you.
Explore the Congo rainforest, the Sahara Desert, the savannas of Kenya, and the island of Madagascar through living books, mapwork, and hands-on activities like designing your own kente cloth, simulating wind patterns in the Sahara, retelling African folktales with picture cards, creating your own animal field journal, and learning about symbiotic relationships on the savanna. Students will learn about energy cycles, ecological adaptation, the impact of fire on grasslands, and the causes of desertification—all while building map skills and exploring how people and ecosystems are connected.
This curriculum is designed for 1st–5th graders, with adaptations provided to scale activities up or down depending on ability level. For example, when exploring conservation, younger children can join a nature clean-up while older students can research and graph the status of endangered animals.
If you complete all of the continent studies by Hatching Curiosity, you will have covered a full year of biology and a full year of earth science—making this geography unit the perfect 2-in-1 curriculum!
