Over and Under the Flower Bed

Materials:

Nature journal, drawing utensils of choice, and garden bed you can dig into

Activity:

Record observations of your flower bed. What is growing, decaying, moving? Then take a small shovel and dig into the dirt. What is under the ground growing, decaying, and moving? This lesson is great for learning to look at things from different perspectives and to “dig” a little deeper when making observations.

Younger:

Have them dig into the dirt with their hands for sensory play and discovery

Older:

Discuss what living things need (air, water, food) and how living organisms under the soil obtain these things. Have them research soil to discover that soil is more than dirt and a living ecosystem.

Take it Further:

Do a mini-lesson on worms for younger kids and soil for older kids.
