Nature Journal, drawing utensils of choice, and a nature walk

Optional Materials:

Dirt, pot, seed, water, or Basket for collecting treasures

Activity:

In early spring go on a walk in one of your nature study areas and ask the children to look for the first signs of spring. The world may look sleepy from a distance but when you look closely you can find insects moving, grass popping up under the previous growth, soppy mud where snow once stood, and buds on the branches. Have them record their observations in the nature journal.

Younger:

Ask them what things make them think of spring before sending them on a search. Giving small suggestions if they are unsure of what to look for.

Older:

Encourage them to write down questions about the changing of the seasons in their journal entry.

Take it Further:

Do a mini-lesson on seasons and plant seeds as a family to watch grow in your windowsill. A great resource for introducing seeds, pollination, and plants is “From Seed to Plant” by Gail Gibbons.
