Materials:

Nature Journal, writing utensil of choice,

Activity:

Kids choice! Where do they want to go for their nature study today? A hike, a lake, a desert, a garden? Have the kids choose the location and what they want to put in their journals when they get there. Let them lead the way, choose the break, snack, and tell you all about their discoveries.

Younger:

You may choose the location for younger children but once they are in the habit of making observations, they will have no problem finding something that captures their imaginations to add to their nature journals.

Older:

Let the older children decide if they want to share their entry with you or not. Allow them time to fall down a rabbit hole of curiosity and use this card MANY times throughout the year.

Take it Further:

What is one thing that your kids have been curious about? Find videos, books, and local experts to help answer their questions. Go to a zoo and talk to a zoologist, go to a library and ask the librarian to help you find all the books you can about beetles, speak to a gardener at a garden center about growing tomatoes. Take a field trip to learn more. Watch a documentary together as a family or start a worm farm together. There is POWER in child-led learning, now that they are in the habit of observation and have piqued their natural curiosity take a moment to follow those rabbit holes of interest.
