Evergreen Trees

Evergeen trees.jpg

Materials:

Nature Journal, writing utensil of choice, at least two varieties of evergreen trees to observe

Activity:

Visit a coniferous forest or wooded area with at least two varieties of conifer trees. Take a close look at their needle shape and arrangement and their cones if there are any on the tree. Draw the evergreen branch in your nature journal. If you have a shortage of conifers then observe other evergreen trees and compare them to deciduous trees at this time of year.

Younger:

Young children may benefit from comparing an evergreen branch to a deciduous branch.

Older:

Conifers can be identified by their needle shape and arrangement. Have older children learn to identify at least two different types of conifers or evergreen trees local to your area.

Take it Further:

Do a mini-lesson on evergreen trees like the one below from the Joyful Nest ECE Why do they not lose their leaves and how does this benefit them? How do they spread their seeds?
