Man's Impact on Nature
Materials:
Nature Journal, writing utensil of choice, a place to observe mans interaction with nature
Activity:
Visit a farm, trail, beach, etc. where you can observe people interacting with the land. Watch how people use the space. Do they take things? Leave things behind? Make improvements? Erode the coastline? Discuss the positive and negative effects we have on the earth and have the children draw themselves in their favorite outdoor place having a positive impact on nature.
Younger:
Have young children tell you one way we can take care of the earth.
Older:
If it is safe to do so, have older children help you pick up garbage at a local trail or suggest another project they can do to make a difference in your local nature community. You may even have them write their proposal in their nature journal stating a problem they have noticed and their suggested solution to it.
Take it Further:
This is a great time to discuss your values. Talk about sustainability, being good stewards over the earth, land management, or your family’s gardening practices that take care of the soil and animals. Discuss global warming or ethical eating. Whatever you want to impart to your children about their relationship to the earth. I’ve included a “Love the Earth” coloring sheet with ways we can positively affect our environment. You can color along with your kids while you talk about ways to care for our planet.
