FREE physical adaptations for winter activity from Hatching Curiosity’s original Antarctica Unit Study

Materials:

Nature Journal, drawing utensils of choice, and a nature walk

Activity:

In early winter go on a walk in one of your nature study areas and ask the children to look for the first signs of winter. Have the temperatures changed? What do the grasses and trees look like? Where are the animals and bugs? Is there snow or frost? Have them record their observations in their nature journal.

Younger:

Ask younger children what things make them think of winter before sending them on a search. Giving small suggestions if they are unsure of what to look for.

Older:

Encourage older children to write down questions about the changing of the seasons in their journal entries. Then investigate answers to their questions when they get home adding notes to what they discovered on their outing.

Take it Further:

Talk about animal adaptations, migration, or hibernation during winter. There is a Free Adaptation activity above just click the image to download it. A fun picture book about waiting for winter may spark your children’s imaginations as they head out on their nature study this week.
